It’s been a while since I featured any Okinawan content on the blog, but recently the island seems to be embracing specialty coffee culture with quite a few new spaces opening their doors and putting out some pretty decent espresso. One of the best is Zhyvago Coffee Works which kicked off operations last month.
As far as locations go, the guys have the island vibes pretty sorted with a prime waterfront position down in Chatan, however step inside and it’s a completely different story. Over the last year, owner and barista Kentaro Iihoshi did two recon trips to Portland. Staying at the Ace Hotel, he fell in love with the city and the coffee culture and decided it was time to share a slice of Oregon with Okinawa. Most of the space’s fittings and furniture were actually purchased whilst Kentaro was in Portland and shipped all the way across the Pacific for the fitout.
Coffee is roasted locally by Yoshi Nakamura of Mame Pore Pore roasters, one of my favourites on the island. It’s run through the La Marzocco Strada and there’s currently a Rwandan Buf Nyarusiza that’s right on the money.
Zhyvago, if you’re in Okinawa get amongst it.
